Meet Elaine. Retail Sales Assistant.

I’m contracted to work from 7-11pm, Monday to Thursday. But most weeks I pick up around 20 hours of overtime as well. I just come in on a Monday night and ask if there are any extra shifts I can do. If there are, I’ll fill out some forms and then I’m all set. I do the 10am-2pm shift. That way I can work while my son is at school. It’s great. I’m working full-time hours, but I’ve got all the flexibility you could ask for.

I love my hours

For me, the best thing about working here is the hours.

I don’t have to work weekends or bank holidays, which is a huge sell. I only have to work 7-11pm, Monday to Thursday. It means we never have to pay for childcare.

My husband is home by the time I go to work, so he can look after our son then. And whenever there’s a six-week school holiday or it’s the Easter holidays, it doesn’t interfere with our schedules. It’s brilliant.

Working with other mums

I get on really well with everyone here. In the evenings there are a few mums who work here too. It’s nice. We’re always laughing about the kids and it feels a bit like a social event. Sometimes being at home can be really stressful and you can’t wait to leave the house and go to work. It might sound weird, but you just want to be yourself, not a mum. You want to have an adult conversation. And working at Primark has always given me that outlet.

Reason to feel proud

I like at the end of the night when the store is really tidy and you start doing the sizing. Getting everything into order from size 4 to size 20. It just makes it so much easier for customers. When I’m all done and everything looks nice, I’ll step back and think, “Yeah, I did that.” It feels great. Maybe I’m the only who thinks that way, but it always makes me feel proud!
